Acne affects people of all ages, not just teenagers. Knowing what causes it helps you choose treatments that actually work.

What causes acne?

Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with oil and dead skin cells. Bacteria and inflammation then lead to blackheads, whiteheads, red spots or deeper cysts. Hormones, genetics, some medicines, stress and heavy skincare products can all play a part.
